Aladdin Shrine Leadership

The Aladdin Shrine Leadership, also known as the Divan, includes an annually moving line of seven men, five of whom are Elected and two who are Appointed. There are also two additional Elected positions and one additional Appointed position that do not move up in the line, making a total of ten members of the Divan.

Below are the positions that are elected by the nobility each year.

  • Potentate – President of the Shrine Temple. The Nobles vote annually for their choice of Potentate.
  • Chief Rabban – 1st Vice President of the Shrine Temple. It is expected that the Chief Rabban will, the following year, be elected by the Nobility to the position of Potentate.
  • Assistant Rabban – 2nd Vice President of the Shrine Temple. It is expected that the Assistant Rabban will, the following year, be elected elected by the Nobility to the position of Chief Rabban.
  • High Priest & Prophet – 3rd Vice President of the Shrine Temple. It is expected that the High Priest and Prophet will, the following year, be elected elected by the Nobility to the position of Assistant Rabban.
  • Oriental Guide – 4th Vice President of the Shrine Temple. It is expected that the Oriental Guide will, the following year, be elected elected by the Nobility to the position of High Priest & Prophet. (In some Temples, though not at Aladdin Shrine, this is an appointment of the incoming Potentate, but then he has to be elected by the Nobility to become Oriental Guide.)
  • Treasurer – Responsible for the monies of the Temple. This position does not move up in the line.
  • Recorder – Secretary, responsible for the records of the Temple. This position does not move up in the line.

Below are the positions that are Appointed by the Potentate each year.

  • 1st Ceremonial Master – It is expected that the 1st Ceremonial Master will, the following year, be elected by the Nobility to the position of Oriental Guide.
  • 2nd Ceremonial Master – It is expected that the 2nd Ceremonial Master will, the following year, be appointed by the Potentate to the 1st Ceremonial Master.
  • Chaplain – Responsible for leading the benediction and pledge of allegiance at meals and meetings. This position does not move up in the line.

Other Shrine Temples may also include the following officers appointed by their Potentate each year: Director, Marshal, Captain of the Guard, and Outer Guard. Aladdin Shrine does not currently include any of these officer positions.

Aladdin Shrine Board of Directors

The Aladdin Shrine Board of Directors is made up of the seven elected positions: Potentate (Chairman), Chief Rabban (Vice Chairman), Treasurer, Recorder, and three Trustees (Assistant Rabban, High Priest & Prophet, and Oriental Guide).

The three appointed positions (1st Ceremonial Master, 2nd Ceremonial Master, and Chaplain), as well as the Executive Director of Aladdin Shrine, also attend Board Meetings, though they do not have a vote on decisions. They do have a voice in discussions, however. This is to keep all Divan members as well as the facility’s Executive Director up-to-date on all decisions made by and discussions presented at the Board meetings.
