2026 First Lady Susan Aldridge’s Project
Each year, the First Lady of Aladdin Shrine chooses an important project to support. This year, First Lady Susan Aldridge has selected the Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetic Services (POPS) program at Shriners Children’s Lexington. This program manufactures, designs, and fits orthotics and prosthetics for children, from infants to young adults. Children are the only focus of POPS. They understand the unique requirements of a growing body and how those requirements change and evolve as children get older.
To anyone donating specific tiered dollar amounts to her project, the First Lady is giving jewelry and Aladdin Shrine tees in various designs as a gesture of thanks for his or her donation.
More About the Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetic Services (POPS) Program
Located on site at Shriners Children’s Lexington, the close relationship between the POPS staff and the UK Medical Center’s staff allows them to work together to evaluate each child’s specific needs and abilities. Using this information, POPS’ experienced, accredited orthotists and prosthetists create a custom device, typically in days instead of weeks, that is the most effective and least restrictive for the child.
These devices – including shoe inserts, braces, and artificial limbs for both arms and legs – provide the support children need to meet their full potential and pursue their dreams, whether that’s swimming in a race, throwing a baseball, playing an instrument, or just keeping up with their friends.
A visit to POPS is more than measurements and mechanics. It’s about sharing hopes and dreams and providing an orthotic or prosthetic with the fit and function that child needs at that moment. They are devoted to designing braces, artificial limbs and adaptive devices that provide an exceptional fit, comfort and appearance. This reduces pain and allows children to live more independent lives.
Last year 4,445 visits were made to POPS, and they gave out 2,578 devices. The average cost per device is $1,432. Each child will need numerous devices as their bodies grow and they develop new skills. POPS’ goal is help provide them with the vital services they need.
“It’s not what you gather but what you scatter” is First Lady Susan’s theme this year. Please help continue Aladdin’s tradition of support through the First Lady’s Project and keep these children moving and exceeding their potential.
If you would like to donate to the First Lady’s project, you can find her at any Potentate’s Visitation and at most Aladdin Shrine meetings and events. Donations can be made by cash, check, or credit card.
